FAQS

Bold Italic Custom Designed, Self Managed Websites

You’ve probably got a few questions to ask, and rightly so, I can totally appreciate that it’s a big decision to get your business or service online. Below I have included some FAQs that I have come across in my website journey, however if you have another question in mind, please get in contact with me and I’ll be sure to help the best I can!

Starting up.

What is a domain name?

A domain name is the address to your website. (For example www.yourbusinessname.com.au). The domain name is an instruction that directs your browser to look at the designated hosting server and retrieve the webiste files that then display in your browser. Domain names are rented and have a yearly fee.

I already have a domain name, can I use that?

Yes of course.

Sometimes business’s present themselves with akward domain name situations, where they have been purchased by a long lost business partner or under another web developers name.

It is best to make sure your business is the licence holder for your domain name and that the contact details are always kept up to date. If you do not hold the current ownership you will need to ask the respective person to provide you with the “Registry Key / Domain Name Password” so you can transfer it into your own name. To find out who owns the current licence you can check websites like this: who.is.

To transfer the domain name into your name you will need to use the domain name password and sign up to a register (I reccomend using the same supplier as your hosting account to keep all your billing in one place, however it is totally fine to have in a different supplier.) A popular domain name supplier is CrazyDomains, thier service is easy to use and manage, and they are quite affordable. Unlike hosting, there is no quality difference between domain name suppliers as it is simply a registration.

Bold Italic can set up a domain name for you, or guide you through the process. At all times the Domain Name stays in your business name and ownership. It is best practice to make sure that the business maintains ownership of these details.

What is hosting?

Hosting is an online space where all your website files are stored and saved. Hosting spaces are rented and come in a range of options. To run an efficient website it is important to use a good quality host.

It is important to make sure that the hosting is WordPress compatible and absolutely crucial that the hosting has an SSL Certificate.

My favourite host for Australian businesses is Ventra Ip. They provide excellent customer support, fast speeds, a reliable connection and are best value for money.

Secondly, I recommend SiteGround. Whilst you are unable to get them on the phone, they have great chat support, and awesome for a WordPress site. SiteGround is also great for international businesses. The quality of their hosting is excellent.

Do I need to purchase a domain name and hosting?

Some businesses like to puchase the domain name and hosting themselves which is totally fine. They simply share the account details with me whilst I publish the webiste and change the password afterwards.

If you are not too confident in the process, I am also happy to arrange the Domain Name and Hosting for you. Rest assured that the ownership will remain in your name. You wil also be responsible for paying the yearly fees.

I already have an existing website, can I use that hosting?

Yes certainly. Although it is important to remember that the quality of your hosting ultimately defnines the speed and reliability of your website. It is also important to make sure that the hosting is WordPress compatable.

How long does it take to develop a website?

The length of time it takes to build a website can vary depending on the complexity and scale of the project (eg. it may take around 2 weeks for smaller websites, and 8 weeks for more complex websites). There will be time set aside for planning, design, development, feedback/revisions and testing. If you have a deadline in mind please let me know at the beginning of the process and I can let you know if it is achievable. When we start working together, I will send you a design proposal that outlines your project timeline.

Why do you use WordPress?

WordPress is very powerful. It is an open source content management software and currently powers around 25% of all websites on the internet. WordPress is contributed to by tens of thousands of developers all over the world and is growing from strength to strength. WordPress allows me to develop flexible and customisable websites with best practices to current standards.

Why use a web designer?

Using a web designer can save you time and stress in the short-term, and deliver a website that offers tremendous value to your business in the long-run. I believe in investing in good design. Sure there are lots of DIY platforms out there however the results can vary and be clunky. A poorly made website may end up actually costing you more in the long run. Ultimately, you will need to determine how important the website is to the success of your business, and if your time and resources would be better used elsewhere.

How much does it cost to build a website?

Website costs will vary depending on the complexity of the project.

There is a one off fee for the website design and development by Bold Italic + yearly charges for the Domain Name and Hosting + Any other 3rd party plugins fees (if applicable).
